Mandurah is a coastal city in Western Australia, located some 72 kilometres south of the state capital of Western Australia, Perth. Mandurah is the Western Australia’s second-largest city, with a population slightly more than Bunbury. Mandurah takes its name from an Aboriginal (Noongar) word meaning “meeting place” or “trading place”. A townsite for Mandurah was laid out in 1831, two years after the establishment of the Swan River Colony, but wasn’t popular. Prior to the post second world war boom of the 1950s and 1960s, Mandurah was little more than a small fishing village. However, in past decades, Mandurah’s reputation for boating and fishing has seen it attract a large number of retirees with the canal developments in the city’s south popular for housing. Together with 4 other local government areas (Boddington, Murray, Serpentine-Jarrahdale, and Waroona), the City of Mandurah is included in the wider Peel region.
